Can photographs confirm a hair transplant?

Searches for a Mo Salah hair transplant often lead to comparisons of photographs taken at different times. Those photographs cannot establish whether he has had surgery, which technique was used or how many grafts were involved. This article does not identify him as a patient of our clinic.

A change in hairstyle or the appearance of a hairline is not a clinical diagnosis. Lighting, hair length and camera angle can also affect a comparison. It would be misleading to turn that comparison into a treatment history or promise the same appearance to another person.

FUE, FUT and DHI: what the terms mean

A hair transplant moves existing hair from a donor area to an area affected by thinning or baldness. The two main harvesting approaches are FUE and FUT.

With FUE hair transplantation, the surgeon removes individual follicular units using a small punch. The grafts are then placed in the recipient area. FUE leaves small scars; it is not scar-free surgery.

With FUT, a strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed and divided into grafts. The donor wound is closed with stitches and leaves a linear scar. Suitability depends on an individual assessment, rather than a rule that FUT is only for the most advanced hair loss.

DHI refers to implantation terminology used by some clinics. A Choi implanter places grafts into the recipient area; it does not extract them from the donor scalp. Ask the surgeon to explain both the harvesting and implantation steps in the proposed procedure.

Recovery and risks

Hair transplantation is usually performed with local anaesthetic. Recovery can involve soreness, swelling and scabbing. Surgical risks include bleeding, infection and an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic. A consultation should cover these risks and the support available if a problem develops.

The NHS hair transplant guide advises that full results may take 10 to 18 months. A photograph taken shortly after a procedure cannot show the final result. Follow your surgeon's instructions about washing, exercise and returning to work.

Planning your own hairline

A footballer's photograph can help explain the appearance you like, but it cannot supply your graft plan. Discuss your existing hair, donor supply and likely future loss with the surgeon. Ask what can realistically be achieved and whether treatment is appropriate at all.
